Workshops and Field Trips
WCDP 2023 participants had the opportunity to take part in a range of drowning prevention masterclasses and workshops, site visits and demonstrations to explore and experience historical, cultural, and innovative sites and facilities across Perth and surrounds.
1. Coastal Safety Field Trip
1 – 3 December 2023
Visit Margaret River, one of the most ancient geographies on the planet. Nestled in the traditional land of the Wadandi (Saltwater) People where we will make use of the purpose-built Surf Life Saving Western Australia Development Centre with onsite accommodation and training facilities.
2. Drowning Prevention Research & Policy Workshop
2 – 3 December 2023
Spend the weekend in Fremantle debating a range of drowning research and policy topics. Spend more time debating topics from WCDP, contributing to research projects, scoping future policy and research projects with new and old friends.
3. Rottnest Day Trip
2 December 2023
Discover the home of the famous Quokka and participate in the Swim Thru Rottnest event, one of the longest-running events on Rottnest Island / Wadjemup. This family-friendly swim event takes place in the crystal-clear waters of Rottnest Island and has 500-metre and 1600-metre swim options and over 800 swimmers and attendees.
4. Swimming and Water Safety Education Field Trip
3 December 2023
Observe delivery of innovative swimming and water safety programs at swim schools, aquatic centres, and coastal locations throughout Perth, while hearing from experts in the space on current trends, priorities, challenges, and achievements.
5. Cultural Workshop - Perth Waterways
4 December 2023
Described by the early colonists as Paradise, the land where Perth City now sits has been home to the Noongar since the Dreamtime (Nyitting). Join us to share in local cultural sites within Perth City, discover Noongar culture along the banks of the Derbal Yerigan (Swan River) and hear stories of resistance and courage on this short walking tour.
6. Heritage Tour - Lifesaving in Perth
4 December 2023
An in-depth look at the history of lifesaving in Perth. Join us to hear the stories and visit some of the key locations that have shaped the face of lifesaving in WA from the first public swimming baths to the place where the Surf Life Saving movement was founded in WA in 1909.
